For more information on the related public consultation workshop which took place from June 29 - July 2, 2009, please click here.
Objective of the consultation
The aim is to provide the opportunity to all individuals and organisations with an interest in life cycle based data, methods and assessments to provide input to the draft ILCD documents.
General background and objectives of the ILCD
Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) and the related quantitative tool Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are moving into the core of modern environmental policies and business decision support on a global basis. In a growing number of countries life cycle approaches are gaining in relevance. Drivers are often national and international Ecolabeling schemes, Carbon footprint labels, Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), Green Public Procurement (GPP), and Eco-design or other resource protection activities as well as solid waste management regulations. This development is reflected in many voluntary private sector initiatives (such as Ecodesign guidances, Carbon declarations, etc.) .
The International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) aims at providing a differentiated guidance for consistent and quality-assured LCI data and methods as basis for further LCA applications. The ILCD consists primarily of the ILCD Handbook and the ILCD Data Network: The Handbook is a series of technical guidance documents inline with the ISO 14040 series. The de-centralised, web-based Data Network will provide consistent and quality-assured life cycle inventory (LCI) data sets that are compliant with the requirements of the ILCD Handbook; it will be open for all data providers to join.
The consulted guidance documents
Four draft guidance documents and one additional background document are put out for international public consultation (see “view the consultation document”).
Received contributions will be published on the Internet. It is important to read the specific privacy statement attached to this consultation for information on how your personal data and contribution will be dealt with.

Reason why the consultation period is less than 8 weeks
Not applicable as the consultation period is longer than 8 weeks to provide sufficient time for commenting.
Reason why notice of the meeting/seminar/public hearing is less than 20 working days
The public workshop has been introduced as an additional opportunity for all interested individuals and organisations to provide and discuss comments and has been pre-announced to a very large distribution list more than 20 working days before the meeting; the formal invitation has been sent out by email 14 working days before the meeting. The public workshop will not lead to a reduction of the consultation period to less than 8 weeks.
